Xin chào! That means “hello” in Vietnamese. My name is Thu Hoang, and I’m a first-year student (Class of 2028) from Haiphong, Vietnam. While I don’t know what I want to major in yet, I’m interested in Computer Science, Psychology, Mathematics, Education Studies, and Religion! That is why I chose Amherst, because I know I’ll have so much freedom to explore and pursue what I love here (kudos to the Open Curriculum).
Outside of academics, I’m a member of the Women’s Ultimate Frisbee Team and Ideas 2 Innovation’s Engineering Team (a student-led venture accelerator at Amherst). You can also find me here and there at Math Club, First Year Bible Study (FYBS), Psychology DEI Committee, and Asian Students Association (ASA) events. I also love hanging out at the Center for International Student Engagement (CISE) or studying at Frost Library.
Feel free to contact me at thuhoang28@amherst.edu with questions about anything Amherst-related. I mean it! I came here because during my visit, everyone I met was so welcoming toward my questions. So don’t be afraid to reach out. I’ll be super excited to answer you 🙂
Fun fact: I took a gap year after committing to Amherst and spent that time bonding with my family, playing with cats, meeting tons of new people, and working as a freelance tutor. My gap year has shaped my college experience in many ways, so if you’re curious, ask me about it!
