Dorm life is a quintessential part of the college experience. It’s where you’ll sleep, study, laugh, cry, and make memories that last a lifetime (subjective). But if you’re anything like me, moving into a dorm for the first time can feel daunting. What should you bring? What will it be like to share a space? Here’s everything I wish I knew before starting dorm life.

Sharing Space: Most dorms involve sharing a room, bathroom, and common areas. It’s an adjustment, but also an opportunity to build friendships.

Noise and Activity: Dorms can be lively, especially during weekends. Investing in earplugs or noise-canceling headphones is a lifesaver for quiet study times.

Community Living: From floor meetings to communal events, dorm life fosters a sense of community. You’ll meet people from all walks of life, and some might become lifelong friends.

Essential Items to Pack: Bedding, toiletries, laundry supplies, a fan (THIS IS A MUST), and a sturdy laundry basket are must-haves. Don’t forget extension cords and a power strip!

Personal Touches: Bring photos, blankets to stay warm, EXTRA PILLOWS (trust me), or decorations that make your space feel like home.

Organizational Hacks: Dorm rooms can be small, so use under-the-bed storage, hanging shelves, and over-the-door organizers to maximize space. (all these are optional)

Communication with Roommates: Reach out to your roommate(s) before move-in to discuss shared items (like a mini-fridge or microwave because Amherst is unfortunately taking these away) and set boundaries for your living space.

Preparing for Shared Bathrooms: A shower caddy, flip-flops, and a quick-dry towel will be your best friends in communal bathrooms.

Dorm life is an adventure filled with challenges and rewards. With a little preparation and an open mind, you’ll not only survive it—you’ll thrive in it. Embrace the experience, and who knows? Your dorm might just become your favorite place on campus.

I can go more in depth on my experience later but for now, here is a bit of what to expect.
