Hello readers,
I want to help you stay organized in college! There are so many assignments, personal tasks, office hours, etc., to keep track of–you need a sound system to ensure everything gets done promptly. I had a planner in high school but found it inadequate for college. In high school, my class schedule rarely moved around, so I didn’t feel the need to record the days/times of my classes. But, college classes and their locations can vary. They may even be canceled on occasion. I advise using Google Calendar to input all your classes and alter them as needed weekly. Having a Google Calendar is also helpful for managing upcoming events. There are so many cool things to do at Amherst. However, it’s essential not to double-book yourself and leave gaps in your calendar for exceptional circumstances. Here is an example of my Google calendar:

To keep track of homework assignments and personal tasks, I recommend creating a spreadsheet! I love having my due dates written out months in advance so that I know exactly when midterms are and when to start/turn in projects. It is also helpful in recording grade breakdowns and office hours times/locations. I didn’t realize when coming to college that you usually can’t see your grades until the final transcripts come out. At least, at Amherst College, that is typical. Last semester I had no idea what my grades would be until I got my final grades at the end. That’s why recording assignment/test grades in a spreadsheet may be helpful to see where you stand in the class. Here is a screenshot of my assignment spreadsheet:

Lastly, I have found taking notes on an iPad super helpful. Now, I’m not saying you have to go out and buy an iPad–I know how expensive they are! But, if you have one or an upcoming birthday, I think it’s a wise investment. I use Goodnotes to take notes on all my courses. I was a pencil/paper student in high school, but I had to carry many notes and binders daily. Digital notes make my backpack lighter and elevate my notes. Homework assignments are submitted online through Gradescope, so completing work online and downloading a PDF is quickest. I can also copy and paste my notes to make flashcards, erase as much as I want without erase marks on my page, resize notes to fit study sheets, and keep everything all in one place! I occasionally look through my notes from last semester’s chemistry to help with my current chemistry course. I love being able to look back at my old notes at any time. Here are some of my online notes (warning: they look a little messy!):
