Hello all!

The fall season is famous at Amherst College for a reason. From the golden glow of the surrounding mountains to the steamy pumpkin spice beverages in Frost Cafe, it’s hard not to love. However, just as the start of fall often feels more like summer, the end hints at the beginning of winter. As we stand in that in-between moment, I thought it would be nice to reflect on some of the wonderful aspects of peak Amherst fall while we brace and look forward to the winter season.

five friends stand with Amherst mascot at the homecoming game

Every year, the homecoming football game proves to be one of the most thrilling occasions of the season. Win or lose, it is an excellent opportunity to grab friends, wear all your merch, eat barbecue, and cheer your heart out. It is also an excellent opportunity to meet the campus mascot, and a few lucky winners—including my good friend Sofia (directly to the left of the mammoth)—get the chance to kick a field goal for a prize. Alumni spanning decades return to Amherst to watch the game, and the community comes together to celebrate. This year was one of the most riveting games yet, and we beat our rivals, Williams College.

The cat may be out of the bag, but New England has gorgeous foliage. Amherst is certainly no exception; there is nothing like a blue sky day, crisp fall air, chai latte in hand, and taking a walk to soak in all the orange, red, and yellow hues. While there are plenty of trees to admire on campus, I highly recommend taking a drive or going for a hike, if possible, to experience even more of what the area has to offer. You will not regret it!

Fall also means Halloween. Throughout October, you can expect activities such as pumpkin painting in the Valentine Dining Hall, sustainability-run free costume events, and much more. This year, many students chose to dress up for the school-run ‘rave’ held on November 1st, still feeling the Halloween spirit. One of my professors even gifted each of my classmates and me a spooky treat–yes, the eyeball. It tastes better than it looks. (Get it?)

As we say goodbye to fall, I must point out that there is much to look forward to in the winter: hot chocolate, magical snow, and the annual tradition of delightfully ugly sweaters. I’ll be back next week, when the weather is even colder. Tune in then!

Best wishes,

Ailís
