For me, the hardest part of Fall Semester is the three weeks after Thanksgiving break, when classes are about to end and finals are about to begin. I think this is because the end is in sight, yet still feels so far away… and mainly because I’m looking forward to the holiday festivities that come with the break.
I’ve found that one way to combat this end of semester slump is to bring the holiday festivity to my dorm, instead of waiting until I’m away from Amherst to start celebrating! I’m going to share a few ways that I’ve personally decorated my dorm room, and then give some extra ideas as well.
#1: A mini Christmas tree (pictured above):
This really adds a spark to my room and my attention gravitates towards it every time I’m feeling down. It’s also a good idea to get one if you’re planning on doing gift exchanges with your friends, because you can put the gifts under/around it!
#2: An advent calendar:

Not only does this serve as a festive decoration in my room, it also gives me something to look forward to each day, which is absolutely essential during finals period. Also, the things that I get in the calendar also add more festivity to my room and my day, so it’s really a win win.
#3: Colorful string lights:

This is an absolute must for me. It brings color to my room and serves as a relaxing form of lighting when I don’t feel like having the big light on. The first thing I do in the morning is plug them in so that I get an instant festive feeling!
#4: Holiday themed candy (in festive bowls):

Another fun and simple way to bring festivity to your room, with the added bonus of having sweet treats accessible! Sugar is something that definitely helps me stay motivated for my finals, so this is perfect.
Extra Ideas:
#5: Gingerbread houses (there is typically a free gingerbread decorating event in the dining hall each year!)
#6: Holiday themed bedding/throw blankets
#7: A hot chocolate bar with fun toppings
#8: Festive paintings or drawings on the walls
Thank you for reading! I hope this inspired you to decorate your own space for the holidays and gave you some ideas for your future dorm. I believe that our living space has such an impact on our mindsets, so it’s important to make it reflect the energy that we want to feel.
