Hi readers! Welcome back! Sit back, relax, and enjoy hearing about my experience of moving out of my dorm at the end of my first-year at Amherst.
Move out…a very busy time at Amherst College. It seems like it is a mad dash to the finish to get all of your classes, school work, and packing done at the end of the school year. When I first moved into my first-year dorm of Appleton Residence Hall, I did not think that anything could be more busy, chaotic, and fun! Turns out, I had not considered that I would have to move out all of my things at the end of the year as well…oops!
Being from Santa Fe, New Mexico, it is not very easy for my family to travel across the country quickly and easily to the Amherst Campus. Because of this hindrance, I decided that I wanted to take on the endeavor of moving myself out and flying back home once I was done. Considering how I was going to pack my belongings, move them out, and store them for the summer, I knew that I had to do some planning.
Something that I love about Amherst College students is that we are always looking to help each other out, and team up with each other to make tasks easier and more efficient and affordable. For example, there is a school wide group chat where students offer each other the opportunity to share ride-sharing services such as Uber, or share personal cars to drive each other to the airport or other locations. I appreciate this greatly!
In beginning to plan my move-out adventure, I began to ask some of my fellow students that lived farther away from the East Coast, if they wanted to share a storage unit. I was able to find two friends that wanted to! We found a storage unit, and reserved it so that we could keep our stuff safe until we came back in the fall semester. This was a great experience because we were able to share the expense of the storage unit and help each other move our belongings from the first-year quad to the unit.
In considering how I was going to begin to pack my belongings, I bought some large storage bags with handles, so that they would be easy to carry where they needed to go. Because I still had to juggle classes, finals, and packing, I started the process early so that I could pack my belongings little by little versus all at once. Thankfully for FaceTime, I was able to call my family members so that they could help me pack even from across the country.

When the day to move out my belongings finally arrived, my friends and I rented a Zipcar, so that we could drive our boxes and bags to the storage unit. Because so many students in the area seek out storage units, our storage unit was about a 25-minute drive away from campus. Once we got everything placed into the storage unit, we knew that the school year was finally over! We had conquered the move out experience, and now we could fly home to have a fun summer!
