Hello peeps! My name is Joy Gao, and I’m a rising sophomore at Amherst College. I’m from Los Angeles, California, but I’m also an international student from Yunnan, China. I’ve declared majors in Economics and Mathematics.

Before college applications were due, I just wanted a vacation. A trip to the other end of the country, completely free. I craved something new.

It turns out that craving changed my life.

Access 2 Amherst is a program designed for first-generation and low-income students. The program flies participants to a beautiful town called Amherst in Western Massachusetts, all expenses paid. I was incredibly fortunate to be one of them.

A sunset over Memorial Hill, a baseball field, and Amherst College's gymnasium.

The experience gave me more than I ever expected: breathtaking views of Massachusetts, a cozy small-town vibe that felt like it came straight out of Gilmore Girls, comedy shows, delicious food, new friends, and, of course, an introduction to the magic of a liberal arts education.

As one of the most indecisive people you’ll ever meet, I worried that my college application wouldn’t stand out among students who seemed to have it all figured out. But Amherst’s open curriculum changed my perspective. I realized I didn’t need to have every answer; I just needed to be curious, willing to explore, and open to growth.

Meeting the students and faculty at Amherst sealed the deal. I knew then that I had to apply not just to any liberal arts college, but specifically to Amherst.

Now that I am at Amherst, I’d say that this is where the magic truly begins. In the next few series of my blogs, I will share with you my experiences here so far 🙂

So, tune in and feel free to ask any questions! My email is ygao28@amherst.edu
