College Hall, a building with columns and a steeple, on a spring day, and a banner saying, Loeb Center for Career Exploration and Planning

During my time at Amherst, one of the most valuable resources the school has had to offer is the Loeb Career Development Center. I visit this center at least once a month, whether it’s to attend an event or for an appointment with a career advisor. The Loeb Center has helped tons of people, including me, during the internship process, and it also has a ton of different programs, including the Charles Hamilton Houston program, that provides financial assistance for those who find unpaid internships.

Another great feature of the Loeb Center is its support for interviews. There’s an interview space that students can book if they need a quiet place to do an interview over Zoom. The Loeb Center also lets people borrow formalwear for interviews and even goes so far as to host coffee chats with companies that Amherst has relations with, such as Bain and Company, in the Loeb Center. Events such as these coffee chats or information sessions with prospective employers happen quite often and are listed on the Handshake site, where students can also access internships that are posted and geared toward Amherst students.

The Loeb Center’s influence extends beyond its physical buildings and in-person services. The Loeb Center website offers specific information geared towards concentrated career paths, like finance, as well as general information about networking, cover letter writing, and preparing a resume.

I truly can’t emphasize enough how often I go to the Loeb Center as the advisors at the Loeb Center and the peer career advisors, experienced students who can review cover letters and resumes, are super helpful during the internship application season. One of the downsides of the Loeb Center is that the appointments are often always booked, so it can be hard to find a last-minute appointment if something urgent comes up. Still, whenever a first-year asks for help with career advice, I always direct them to the Loeb Center. Overall, the Loeb Center is a truly valuable resource, and I believe that every student at Amherst has to utilize it at least once, if not constantly, throughout their time at Amherst.
