Before the event even began, I found myself eagerly sending out emails to newly admitted rural students—inviting them to stop by, say hi, and grab a s’more at our S’mores with STARS gathering during BAM (Be a Mammoth) weekend. I wasn’t sure how many would show up, but I knew one thing: the fire would be warm, the hot chocolate would be flowing, and the community would be real.

Held at the Keefe Campus Center fire pit on Tuesday, April 15th, the event was open to everyone—current students, admitted students, rural ambassadors, and anyone who wanted to take a break from the busy BAM schedule to just hang out and connect. And honestly? It was one of the coziest and most heartwarming moments of the whole week.
With marshmallows roasting, chocolate melting, and graham crackers stacking, we made s’mores and memories at the same time. There was also hot chocolate on hand for anyone who preferred to sip something sweet while chatting. Between bites and sips, students swapped stories about where they were from, what brought them to Amherst, and what they were most excited (or nervous!) about when it came to college life.
As someone who comes from a rural background myself, seeing other students light up as they realized just how many of us share similar stories was powerful. There’s something special about gathering around a fire and realizing that, even though our towns may be small, our dreams and potential are anything but.
The event was hosted as part of Amherst’s involvement in the STARS (Small Town and Rural Students) College Network, which supports students from rural communities across the country. More than just an info session or a campus tour stop, S’mores with STARS gave students the chance to feel seen, welcomed, and valued.

If you’re from a small town or a rural place and wondering whether there’s a space for you here—there is. And next time, I’ll be saving you a seat (and a s’more) by the fire.
