Amherst Coffee shop in downtown Amherst, with people sitting at tables outside

Hi everyone, I hope you are well! In this week’s blog, I’m going to write about some of my favorite places in the town of Amherst. I’ve noticed that especially as I’ve gotten closer to graduating, I’ve been less and less inclined to spend a lot of time on campus. I’m trying to adjust my schedule a little so I spend more time off campus – be that at the local library, a coffee shop, in Springfield or Northampton, or at my volunteering commitments off campus. But for this post, I’ll keep it in walking distance. If you have any questions, please email me at sgoldsmith24@amherst.edu!

Every Saturday from April-ish to November-ish, there is a farmer’s market in the Amherst town common. I like going and walking around, even if I don’t buy anything – it is fun to look at the art, produce, dairy and meat products, flowers, and people watch.

Another place I love to visit is Black Sheep, a café about five minutes from Val. They have great bagels, coffee, wraps, and pastries, and sometimes on Sunday mornings I head there for a bagel and sit and do some work, just to be off campus. Other great coffee places in Amherst include Share and Amherst Coffee, both with great menus and nice ambiences.

I also enjoy going to Amherst Cinema, our indie movie theater. They don’t show big-budget commercial studio films, but show smaller movies that deserve just as many accolades. Amherst students get free movie tickets there, and I like to go with my friends on Friday nights to see a movie.

Lastly, I would be remiss not to talk about the Jones Library. It is the local Amherst library, and I LOVE it there. I do homework there, read books there, and browse shelves to find new reads. The library is going to get some massive renovations in the next couple of years, which I am very excited for – it serves an essential role in our community, and I can’t wait for it to be able to fit our needs even more.

Thank you for reading! Please email with any questions!
